I sometimes feel that all the much emphasis placed on leadership and vision, and the focus on management best practices doesn’t overlap, and that this causes issues for many unwitting employees. I’ve worked with a lot of managers, and a lot of leaders in my career, and there have been a couple of shockers on both ends of the leadership vs management spectrum.
This HBR article campaigns for those identifying themselves as leaders to recognise the need for good management too. Warren Bennis is famous for the line ““managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing“, but I agree with this article that the two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
If you’re in or aspiring to a leadership/management role, this article is a must-read. And make sure you check out the management and leadership section of the sphinxx blog, for more resources.
